What is the best way to protect wood from sun and rain? The effects of atmospheric agents on wood are particularly visible on windows, structures such as pergolas, verandas, lookouts and similar and certainly on all functional furnishing accessories such as outdoor tables and chairs.
Their area, after excessive exposure to these elements, it turns out to be “burnt”as we say in the jargon, and often presents efflorescences which compromise the aesthetics and the functions of the works in question.
Protect the wood from sun and rain with impregnating varnishes, considering that wood is a natural organic material subject to deteriorationthe most common and also the most effective way to protect it from sun and rain is to treat it with impregnating paints.
What are wood impregnation paints?
These are paints which, unlike enamels, are absorbed by the wood, penetrating into the fibers for 1 to 2 millimeters. This guarantees protection against the most corrosive UV rays and waterproofs the wood, thus preventing water from penetrating deeply, affecting, over time, even the structural properties.
This last aspect is very important especially when it comes to load-bearing architectural elements such as beams and pillars.
Types of impregnates for wood:
what are they and how to choose them There are two types of impregnating agents, water-based and solvent-based. Those with water are of last generation and have been designed with a particular ecological vision, while those based on solvents, let’s say, are a solution that from an environmental point of view is not very sustainable, but with regard to the degree of protection that they offer is certainly excellent.
In reality, the two products are not antagonistic, but, more simply, they have different functions and intended uses. Solvent-based impregnating agents are used on load-bearing and non-load-bearing architectural elements which, due to their use and function, are permanently exposed to wear and tear from atmospheric agents.
Water based impregnants instead they are more suitable for protecting wood, yes, for outdoor use, but not directly exposed to sun and rain; we think of garden tableschairs or other furniture that is usually used protected by verandas, gazebos or the like.
How to apply a primer:
It is certainly important to understand what an impregnator is and what are the main types on the market, but it is equally important to know, after choosing the one that suits us, how to apply it correctly on the product that we want to protect.
The primer is applied to the surface of the wood with a brush or roller depending on the size of the surface to be treated. Normally two hands are given, being careful not to overlap the second with the first when the latter is still fresh.
It should also be considered that depending on the hardness of the wood to be treated, it may be necessary to dilute the impregnating agent with a suitable product and in the manner and in the proportions indicated in the information box. The reason is very simple: the harder the wood, the weaker its ability to absorb liquid through its fibres.
If a wood with these characteristics is treated with an undiluted stain, it will not penetrate deeply enough, thus not guaranteeing an adequate degree of protection. In these cases, not only is it necessary to dilute the primer, but it will probably be advisable to apply a third coat, precisely because diluted it is less effective.
A very important thing before proceeding with the drafting of the product is to check that the wood to be treated has not absorbed moisture. In this case, it is advisable to let it air dry before proceeding with the treatment.
What types of wood to choose for outdoor use?
As we know they exist different types of wood each with its own aesthetic and structural characteristics.
If it is true that Prevention is better than curetaking care when evaluating the purchase of an outdoor table or chairs or even wood with which to build roof structures, saves you time, money and energy in the ordinary and extraordinary maintenance of our furniture or others that we have decided to buy or build.
So what are the most suitable types of wood for outdoor use?
There are mainly 4 of them, here are:
- Pine: this type of wood was little considered in the past, but thanks to advances in technology and new processing possibilities, its use has also become very popular.
- Larch: it is a very resistant type of wood, not very cheap, but certainly one of the most suitable for the manufacture of outdoor floors and objects with various uses and functions.
- Brazilian teak: it is a particularly hard and resistant wood and is mainly used for the creation of flooring for outdoor use.
- Nordic spruce: one of the most widespread woods if we think of the manufacture of load-bearing structures – we think of wooden houses – which are constantly exposed to wear and tear from atmospheric agents.
